FOR PARENTS

Parents have the unique experience of searching for help on their child's behalf. Because of this, they are not only looking for someone with the right credentials, but also someone who is personable and kind, someone their child or teen will feel they can trust and perhaps even enjoy seeing.

What to Expect

Because of this unique requirement, I meet with parents first to discuss their concerns and observations and explore what is working and what is not. It is important that I learn about their child or teen through their eyes. Then together we create a plan for how to best work with their child's personality, fears, strengths and weaknesses.

I next meet the child with the parent to help them feel comfortable and confident meeting someone who is a stranger to them. This continues until the child feels comfortable enough to meet with me without their parent. With teens this happens quickly as they are often wanting to meet without their parents. But it is decided case by case, based strictly on the child's comfort level. For some children, their parents remain a part of every session. This rich Parent-Child Therapy allows parents to be supportive and collaborate with the child working to make changes together as a team.
